Lego Horizon Adventures Review on Share & Marketing

In the past few weeks, we at Share & Marketing had the chance to play an extended preview of the game Lego Horizon Adventures before its official release. We completed the story and all side content, allowing us to give you a full, comprehensive impression of the game. I’m pleased to say the experience was overwhelmingly positive. Here’s our review of Lego Horizon Adventures.

Storyline Without Spoilers

Lego Horizon Adventures reimagines the story of the first Horizon series installment (Horizon Zero Dawn) with a lighter, more comedic tone, making it more suitable for children, the game’s primary audience. The storyline has been adjusted to be more family-friendly, especially on the antagonist side, where villains appear goofy and without harmful intentions.

Gameplay

The gameplay retains the core mechanics of the original Horizon game but is adapted to fit the iconic Lego block design. The game follows a linear structure, with combat, collecting gold coins, and spending them on camp and outfit customization. While the gameplay loop can feel somewhat repetitive, enemy variety and other elements add depth.

  • You can play solo, with a friend online, or in local co-op mode, which expands the game’s appeal.
  • There are simple, enjoyable platforming sections.
  • Camp and character customization offer a deep level of content, potentially adding extra hours of play.

Game Content Summary

  • A straightforward story delivered through cinematics and voiceovers.
  • Linear level design with some freedom for exploration, allowing you to gather new tools or coins.
  • A customizable camp where you can spend coins to unlock or arrange Lego blocks into structures.
  • Each story level ends with a gold brick, marking your progress, unlocking more outfits, and building options as you advance.
  • A robust selection of costumes that can be purchased with coins, offering substantial variety.
  • Four playable characters, each with their own unique weapon.
  • Playable solo or with a friend locally or online.
  • Side missions to hunt monsters, yielding rewards.

The gameplay is varied, thanks to unique playable characters—Aloy with her bow and arrow, Varl with a throwable spear, Terusa with her exploding chickens, and Erend with a versatile hammer. Each character brings something distinct, and the ability to switch between them adds variety.

Combat is fun and chaotic (in a good way) as each enemy has its weaknesses and areas to target. Environmental weapons like electricity, ice, and fire add a challenging twist. Weapons can’t be gradually unlocked but must be collected from drops, which adds a layer of strategy and excitement.

Boss fights, though few, are very enjoyable and more challenging than regular battles, requiring patience and quick thinking.

The building and currency-collecting aspects are entertaining, especially as camp upgrades become visible. For instance, you can build a chicken farm for income, though it requires a large initial investment.

You can also dress characters in wildly different outfits, which serves as a great aesthetic incentive and might encourage players to invest more time in the game to collect them all.

Visuals and Sound

The graphics are excellent, with beautifully detailed environments and vibrant colors that are visually appealing. Despite being a Lego game, it’s visually stunning, exuding positive energy and a sense of calm.

The sound is top-notch, the music and sound effects for monsters and environments are well done, though not particularly distinctive. Still, they maintain Sony’s signature quality.

Additional Content and Multiplayer

The side content, such as camp building and monster hunting, provided an enjoyable challenge. The option to play with friends, either locally or online, adds value to the game, making it enjoyable for both young players and adults, especially when playing with children.

Drawbacks of Lego Horizon Adventures

  • The game length is relatively short, lasting 6-7 hours, or around 10 hours with all side content, which is limited given the $60 price.
  • It lacks cross-platform multiplayer support (e.g., between Nintendo and PlayStation).
  • The game design becomes somewhat repetitive in the last third.

Should You Buy Lego Horizon Adventures?

Yes, if you’re looking for a safe and fun game for your kids or if you’re a fan of Lego games.
